"As a Silicon Valley based CEO in the world of ventures, I have had to raise considerable sums of money privately and publicly to fund companies I was responsible for. Raising money is an art with a critical component being 'the presentation.' I have also been called upon to speak at national and regional meetings on medical technology and/or the experience of being in a venture-backed company. 'Owning the Room,' the making of an effective presentation, is a subject near and dear to my heart...much less, my livelihood...I did find it exceptional for giving speeches and for when presentations involve more than one person. 'Own the Room' will make a valuable addition for those who depend on communication arts for their living, which is just about every executive, manager, professional, consultant, and salesperson."

"I’ve been reading Own the Room. Today, my son, Tommy, who is a senior and Mater Dei showed me one of his essays and asked for my comments (that is unusual for him). He had to write a 150 word essay on how an extra-curricular program has affected him. He picked Cross-Country since he’s been in the program for 4 years. His essay, I thought, was pretty decent and I told him so. Then he asked me, “Would this essay stand out among 100 other essays?” I told him honestly that it would not. Then I drew from some of your tips in the book regarding story telling. As an example of a good brief story, I had him read the introduction of Mark who spoke at his temple about the impact of his disabled son (my favorite story from the book). He’s going to re-write his essay using the principles in Own the Room. You were able to penetrate the mind of my 17-year-old son. That’s rather impressive. Thanks for the parenting help."

"In their new book, Own The Room: Business Presentations That Persuade, Engage And Get Results (McGraw Hill/September 2009), creators of the Eloqui Presentation and Communication Training program David Booth and Deborah Shames, along witih clinical psychologist Peter Desberg, combine their film, TV and theater background with their experience as corporate consultants to guide readers through a revolutionary approach to delivering memorable presentations. Although it contains extensive research and guidance on conquering stage fright, Own The Room goes beyond the run-of-the-mill “face your fear of speaking” tomes that extol the same, tired presentation advice.
Instead, Own The Room boils presentations down to key elements that other speaking guides have missed, including intention, how to move in a space, the best use of PowerPoint and a template for telling compelling client anecdotes."

"Own the Room really deserves a 5-star rating. It's hard to imagine a book about presentations that's actually fun to read, but this one is. But what I like best is the way the authors encourage us to get away from those ho-hum openings. They offer all sorts of creative approaches to making presentations come alive.
As an experienced speaker, I don't get concerned with stage fright. I love speaking and welcome all opportunities. My challenge is to avoid being too relaxed. So I particularly enjoyed the chapter on roles: deciding how you will present yourself to the audience. The discussion on examples and anecdotes was especially strong."

"I've read many books on public speaking over the years, but never one like this. It takes you every step of the way through deciding what the intention of your speech will be, how to put it together, how to move on stage and a good deal of information on Power Point presentations and what they should and should not be. This book is probably the only one that gives me enough confidence to actually feel somewhat relaxed when speaking."

"As a professional speaker with 32 years of presentations under my belt, I didn't expect to discover many new ideas. I was wrong! This book is filled with value. I've delivered more than 2,700 paid professional speeches and yet I
took notes on every chapter and gained a new understanding of my craft. "

"In their book 'Own The Room', David and Deborah share important ways to creatively and effectively use PowerPoint to enhance, not become, your presentation. A must-read chapter called "PowerPoint Revival " will make sure you Own your PowerPoint' too!"

"There's good and bad news about "Own the Room. Let me get the bad news out of the way first. You know all that stuff
you've spent endless time learning about getting through to people and
making presentations that get results? You might just have to throw it
away. That shouldn't shock you, because why would you be checking out
this book if all those other things you've learned worked so well?
Now for the good news. "Own the Room" is here to replace all those out
dated, mediocre result producing techniques you've learned and do
something they never did. It's here to get you the results you are
seeking. This book "had me at hello" because it a) makes sense; b)
feels right; and is c) eminently and imminently doable. And chuck full
of stories and examples that you can literally see makes this book
something that is as enjoyable to read as it is helpful to use.
One of my greatest lessons from "Own the Room" is about becoming
immediately compelling by telling (vs. selling) a story about an
obstacle, problem or challenge that your audience will quickly see
themselves in and dealing with, offering them a solution that not only
works but will impress them as something they wouldn't have thought of
and finally sharing the results it produced. That is just one of the many tips you literally can take to the bank from "Own the Room."
It is a perfect companion to my new book, "Just Listen" Discover the
Secret to Getting Through to Absolutely Anyone (AMACOM, Sept. 15,
2009). I emphasize in that book how getting through to people is not
about pushing yourself on them, but getting where they're coming from,
discovering what they most want and urgently need and then giving it to
them. "Own the Room" is a field guide for doing just that. It's not
about selling, but about compelling people to listen to you and eagerly
want to hear (and then buy) more.
Therefore... make sure you OWN this book and the best way to do that is BUY it."

"As a professional speaker I'm always interested in tips
that can help me connect with my audience, inspire and engage the
people around me. This book is full of ideas that work. The two
chapters that draw me in are the first, Intention and the sixth, Stage
Fright. Two critical issues for me. I highly recommend this book and
know that your presentations will delight you (and your audience) when
you build on what you'll learn here."
